Low Pressure Water Mist

Low Pressure Water Mist System

Water Mist Systems offer an alternative Fire Suppression Solution and an alternative firefighting solution for general applications such as hotels and commercial premises including office blocks as well as more industrial applications such as factory machinery.

Extensively tested and using the very latest technology, water mist systems are installed in the same way as a sprinkler system.

The difference is that in operation micron-sized water droplets are discharged over a wider surface area. By rapidly converting energy to steam the water mist starves the fire of the oxygen it needs to burn. This not only results in a much faster rate at which the water absorbs the heat but also minimises the damage caused to the surroundings.

By the NFPA 750 definition, water mist is a water spray for which the 99% of the total volume of liquid (Dv0.99) is distributed in droplets with a diameter smaller than 1,000 microns at the minimum design operating pressure of the water mist nozzle.

Following the CEN/TS 14972 definition,  water mist is a water spray for which the 90% of the total volume of liquid (Dv0.90) is distributed in droplets with a diameter smaller than 1000 microns at the minimum design operating pressure of the water mist nozzle.

FST represents the water mist system from Fire-Kill, one of the global leaders in this technology.

Advantages of a low-pressure water mist include:

  • Water saving - low-pressure water mist could use up to 90% less water. This means that there is less or smaller infrastructure  ie. pumps, storage and pipe sizes.

  • Lower weight - because flow rates are reduced dramatically when using low-pressure water mist systems,  pipe sizes and water storage systems can follow suit.

  • Pipework can be done with thin wall stainless steel or galvanised steel pipe, which is very light and can be deployed in a deluge format, leaving the pipes empty

  • With the lighter pipework, installation is much easier than other systems and nozzles are pre-installed on pipe runs cutting down installation cost

  • Refills can be done with normal tap water, further reducing cost

  • Systems that are able to save water are fast becoming a necessity rather than a luxury. As climate change plays a larger part of our everyday lives and restriction on water are likely to continue, this is ideal for such environments.

Typical Applications:

  • Tunnels, including  underground mining, train or automobile tunnels

  • Open area transformers

  • HT and LT Switchgear

  • Data centres

  • Draglines

  • Cable tunnels and trenches
